Dentistry is more
than just beautiful smiles…
dentistry is important to your health.
Why should you be concerned about periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease or Pyorrhea, is
the number one infectious disease in America. Unfortunately,
most people don’t even know that they have it until it is almost
too late. Periodontal disease is an ongoing, low-grade bacterial
infection in the gums and bone around your teeth. If not
treated, this ongoing infection can cause you to lose your teeth
and can cause you to lose your good health. Periodontal
infection is responsible for 75% of adult tooth loss. More
importantly, periodontal disease has been linked to a number of
systemic diseases such as stroke, diabetes, heart disease, and
low-birth weight babies. Periodontal disease is also suspected
of being connected as a contributing factor in a number of other
systemic diseases as well.
Periodontal Disease Is An Ongoing Infection
If you had a cut or a sore on your arm or hand that never healed
would you be concerned? Of course you would. Everyone knows that
a sore that is exposed to germs and bacterial can become
infected and lead to serious health consequences. Basically,
periodontal disease is an open wound in the mouth that never
heals. Most people that have it do little or nothing to treat
this disease. Your gums can appear normal and yet pockets of
infection may exist. To safeguard you smile and your health, ask
your dentist or hygienist to examine your gums for signs of
infection.
An ongoing infection taxes your immune system. Your body is
constantly fighting germs and bacterial that enters the body
through infected gum tissue surrounding the teeth. These
bacterial agents are transported throughout the entire body
through the blood stream. Your immune system can become over
worked in a losing effort to fight infection. A depleted immune
system can make your body more susceptible to other
opportunistic parasites and diseases.
Why should I get my periodontal infection treated right away?
People with periodontal disease are at risk of losing their
teeth and can ruin their good health. The sooner you begin
taking care of your periodontal disease, the better chance you
have of arresting the disease before it spreads and becomes more
server. As periodontal disease progresses, more areas can become
infected and more support for your teeth is lost. If detected
early, minimal dental treatment in-office can help restore you
gums to a healthy condition. If you wait, your only choice may
be expensive gum surgery.
What are the symptoms of periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is silent and painless destroyer. Most
people do not even know they have it until it reaches more
advanced stages. You should be aware some of the symptoms which
can indicate the presence of periodontal infection.
1. Red or swollen gums
2. Bleeding when brushing or flossing
3. Aching or tender gums
4. Gum Recession (teeth begin looking longer)
5. Bad breath
6. Change in the position of your teeth
